Your first visit at Essenza Wellness in La Jolla is a 45 to 60 minute conversation with a physician. Not a form on a clipboard, not a rushed intake, not a nurse relaying questions. You sit down with the doctor, talk through your health history and your goals, and leave with a clear picture of what comes next. This guide walks through the whole process, from booking to your written care plan.
Before you arrive
Booking starts with a phone call to 858-267-4872 or the inquiry form on our contact page. Before your first appointment, our team talks with you about how your insurance plan handles out-of-network care, so the financial side is clear before the medical side begins. We explain exactly how that works in our guide to out-of-network billing.
What to bring:
- Your insurance card and a photo ID
- A list of current medications and supplements, with doses
- Any recent lab results or medical records you have. If records live at another practice, we can help request them
- Wearable or tracking data if you use it. Oura, Whoop, glucose monitor exports, and prior direct-to-consumer lab results are all welcome here, and our physicians actually read them
Our office is at 8950 Villa La Jolla Drive, Building C, Suite 212, minutes from UTC and the UC San Diego campus. Parking is on site and free.
The first conversation: 45 to 60 minutes with your physician
The average primary care exam in the United States runs about 18 minutes, according to an analysis of more than 21 million primary care visits published in the journal Medical Care. Your first Essenza consultation is scheduled for 45 to 60 minutes, roughly three times that, and all of it is with the physician.
That time changes what the visit can hold. The conversation covers your full history, your family history, the treatments you have tried, the ones that did not work, and the concerns you may have stopped bringing up because no one had time for them. It also covers your goals, because care built around what you want your next decades to look like starts by asking.
There is no pressure to commit to anything at this visit. You leave with a clear plan for what comes next, and the decision about whether Essenza is right for you stays yours.
The evaluation: the two to three weeks after
If you move forward, the next step is a comprehensive evaluation, typically completed over two to three weeks. Depending on your goals and history, it can include:
- Advanced lab work that goes well beyond a standard annual panel, described in full on our advanced biomarkers page
- Body composition testing
- Hormone and metabolic panels
- A cognitive and neurological baseline when appropriate
- A structured review of your personal and family risk factors
Not every patient needs every test. The evaluation is built from your first conversation, not from a fixed menu. Every test we order is chosen because the result will change the plan.
The plan review: 60 to 90 minutes, everything explained
When your results are in, you sit down with your physician again for 60 to 90 minutes and walk through every finding together. What each number means. What matters and what does not. What we change first.
You leave this visit with a written plan you actually understand. Patients tell us this is the appointment that feels most different from care they have had before, because the goal is not to hand you results. It is to make sure you understand them.
After that: care that continues
From there, your care runs on a rhythm built around you. Follow-up visits are scheduled at the pace your plan requires, retesting happens on a schedule that fits your situation, and your care is coordinated across our four practices: longevity and internal medicine, psychiatry, neurology, and women’s health. When something time-sensitive comes up between visits, you have a reachable team.
Membership details, including what is covered and how visits work over a full year, are on our membership page.
Three questions we hear before the first visit
Do I need to be sick to come in? No. Many of our patients feel healthy today and want to stay that way for a long time. Prevention-first care works best when it starts before problems do.
Can the first visit happen by video? Some visits can happen by video, depending on the specialty and your situation, and in-office treatments and physical evaluations take place at our La Jolla office. Ask when you call, and we will tell you what your first visit should look like.
How soon can I get an appointment? Concierge practices keep their patient panels deliberately small, which is what makes prompt scheduling possible. The most accurate answer for the current calendar is one phone call away, and we will give you a real date, not a waitlist.
